Food Security and Livelihoods
Rural Somalis have built a rich knowledge base that has sustained their ways of life for centuries. However, years of marginalization have left the rural economy depressed and without the ability to cope. Horn Relief responds by supporting alternative livelihoods, respecting employment dignity and creating engines for economic diversification and prosperity.

Specific programming objectives for 2006/07 include:
- Improve pastoral livelihood system through improved access to water and pastoral rangeland
- Increase incomes at household level through enhanced coping mechanisms
- Create enabling environment for implementation of livelihood systems through
- Improved governance of local resources
- Enhance capacity of local communities, institutions and government for sustainable management of pastoral resources
Our “livelihood partnerships” with local communities concentrate on natural resource management, diversification of livelihood options, and improved livestock production that underpin our other programming to enhance livelihood security now and in the future.
