Horn Relief Drought Appeal

East Africa is suffering a profound hunger crisis that requires an immediate humanitarian response. The crisis is particularly desperate in Somalia where the UN recently declared a famine.

Almost four million Somalis – or half of the entire population – are now in crisis. In some areas of the country’s South Central Region, more than one in four people are severely malnourished. This situation is unlikely to improve until January 2012.

Refugees are fleeing Somalia to camps in Kenya and Ethiopia, and others are walking long distances within the country to reach food and water. Since mid-June 2011, an average of 1,400 Somali refugees have arrived each day to Kenya’s overflowing Dadaab refugee camp. The pastoralist communities around Dadaab in Northeastern Kenya are also impacted by the drought, and their needs are often overlooked. Kenya’s northeastern region is the country’s hardest hit area by the drought, and many families are teetering on the brink of destitution.

The needs of those living in East Africa are vast, and a widespread response is urgently being called for.

Horn Relief’s Response

Horn Relief is aiming to help 500,000 needy individuals in Somalia and Kenya. Their needs are diverse: food, nutrition, clean water, sanitation, health care, protection and shelter.

Horn Relief is in a unique position to deliver aid to the region quickly and effectively. It has over 20 years of experience working in Somalia, and has an established presence in Northeastern Kenya after opening an office there in 2010.

Donate

Emergency aid is needed now to save lives and protect livelihoods. Please consider helping by donating to Horn Relief. Here is a breakdown of what your money can do for a Somali family of eight. Basic needs include water and medicine.

$25 will feed 1 family for 1 week
$100 will feed 1 family for 1 month
$150 will feed and provide basic needs for 1 family for 1 month
$300 will feed and provide basic needs for 1 family for 2 months
$900 will feed and provide basic needs for 3 families for 2 months

Concerned about where your money will go? Ninety per cent of all Horn Relief donations goes directly to needy families, and the remainder provides support.
